Complete Maps vs. Building Kits
Map assets come in two forms. Complete maps give you a ready-to-use environment — just place spawns and game logic. Building kits give you modular pieces (walls, floors, props, vegetation) that you snap together to create custom layouts. Complete maps are faster but less flexible. Building kits take more time but let you create unique environments. Most developers use a mix — a complete map as a base, then customize with additional props and building kit pieces.
Performance Is Everything for Maps
Maps have the biggest performance impact of any asset type. A poorly optimized map with millions of triangles, uncompressed textures, and excessive parts will make your game unplayable. Quality map assets use LOD (level of detail), efficient mesh construction, and streaming-friendly chunking. Always check triangle counts and part counts before using a map in your game. Aim for under 100,000 parts for the entire visible map.
Lighting and Atmosphere
The same map can look completely different with different lighting. Warm sunset lighting creates a peaceful atmosphere. Cold blue lighting feels eerie and dangerous. Green-tinted fog suggests poison or corruption. When evaluating map assets, consider how they look with your game's intended lighting — a vibrant cartoon map will look wrong with dark realistic lighting, and vice versa.
